Clothing:

When you enter prison in  Arizona you get 3 pairs of shirts, pants, socks, boxers and a pair of deck shoes that cost $5.00.  All these clothes are supposed to be brand new but they are not. You are supposed to get 7 pairs of everything but you do not. You get one blanket, no pillow, no towel, and some yards  give you sheets so usually no sheets.  Here are some problems with this. Laundry is usually done by the inmates by hand, because a lot of inmates say the laundry service there is gross and the laundry does not come back clean. Inmates get ringworm and scabies. When inmates get scabies they go to medical, get stripped naked, get cream and spend 3 days in isolation, then go back to their cell. Cell  is are not always cleaned properly get rid of germs and parasites.

Commissary:

You can buy clothes but they are not yours when you leave!!! The only clothing/ items you may take with you when you go are your shoes and your thermals. Everything else gets the letters DOC spray painted on them. When you leave the prison gives a blue T-shirt and blue jeans no jacket or sweat shirt no matter how cold it is outside. If your family sends you street clothes you have to send them to the prison a week ahead of time to make sure they are examined for drugs or weapons before the clothes are handed to the inmate that is leaving. Taxes are added when inmates purchase items through the commissary.

Commissary Items:

  1. Shirts T-shirts and Long Sleeve
  2. Boxers
  3. Socks
  4. Shoes Cheap shoes $20 most expensive Nike’s $80.00
  5. Pants
  6. Thermals
  7. Towels
  8. Food
  9. Personal items shampoo, soap etc.
  10. TV, radios, fans, mp3 players and cd players

Fundraisers:

Once a year Arizona State Prisons will have a fundraiser for blankets, comforters, pillows, sheets and towels. If an inmate has money on their books or can have their family send them money they can order from the fundraiser if not inmates can hustle and buy the old ones from inmates that are ordering new ones or get ones from inmates that are leaving. However, the CO’s will come and confiscate them from the inmates because the inmates do not have  receipts for those items on their books.

The cost of items when they have the fundraisers:

  1.  Sheets $20.00
  2. Comforter $20.00
  3. Blanket $20.00
  4. Towel $10.00- $15.00
  5. Pillows $20.00 (set of 2)

Now you do not get to take these with you when you leave. You have to leave them and usually you give them to another inmate for free. Then it gets confiscated, I’m sure when a new inmate arrives he probably gets the blanket. These are all new items because these do come from a store outside of the prison. Where does the rest of the stuff go?  I’m not sure.

This is Wrong:

This is double payments, double taxing, and having to leave it when you leave prison. And some items are returned to the commissary for resale like tv’s, fans. mp3 players, and cd’s. The commissary is getting paid over and over again for certain items. Why is the prison charging for clothing and having fundraisers once a year for certain items when they get money from tax payers to house inmates for food, clothing, education, rehabilitation, programs and etc. Prison is a billion dollar a year industry.  Where does the money go?

What are the prisons in your states doing?

Send me your thoughts.

    1. Hi,
I do not know if there are any other websites like mine. I know there are a lot of questions on Quora about prison and jail. There are support groups on Facebook for families but you have to know someone or have a loved one in prison to join those groups. I hope that was helpful.

  14. With havin so much content do you ever run into any problems of plagorism or copyright infringement?
My website has a lot of unique content I’ve either written myself or outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without my permission. Do you know any solutions to help reduce
content from being stolen? I’d genuinely appreciate it.

    1. Hello,
I don’t have my content stolen a lot because I write about people’t true life stories. I don’t know what your content is and maybe there are other’s who write about the same things that you do. I would maybe research how many people there are that writing about the same things that you are. That would be my best advise. Not many people write about prisons or people’s lives in prison. Hope it works out for you. Good luck
