Getting locked up:
I don’t think that people realize all things that people will miss when they go to prison. Time stands still when you go to prison. Inmates lose so many things when they are behind those walls and I don’t think they realize that until something happens like a loss of a love one. Imagine going into prison at 21 years of age and getting released at 35 years of age. 14 years have gone by. You do not have the same friends. Some of your family memebers may have graduated high school or may be married by now with children. Maybe some of your family members have passed away. Nothing looks the same in your neighborhood.
When you went into prison you didn’t have touchscreen cellphones or touchscreen computers. You didn’t apply for jobs online. When had an interview for a job you met in person not on Zoom. You paid your bills with a check, cash or with a debit card on the phone or online banking. And ATM’s weren’t as advanced as they are now. You are used to top washers and dryers. you are asking what is this?. There were not all these Apps from weight loss to dating and everything in between when you went into prison. Oh and let’s not forget Door Dash and Grubhub.
Some grow up in prison but it isn’t growing up in the way most people. Fifteen years later they think of growing up. Some grow up being more tough and institutionalized. More with a prison mentality, not a well-rounded way of growing up. Unfortunally, that happens more often than not. Prison is rough and inmates always have to be on guard to protect themselves, be aware of their surroundings at all times.
Education in Prison:
Education in prisons is not what it should be. The government gives money for programs but the programs could be better. The prison system coud prepare inmates a lot better and give them more skills and training for release so that they have a better chance out on the streets and not a chance of returning. The return rate is high because the prison system does not prepeare inmates for life outside of prison. How can it. Inmates life in prison is so structured and everything is done for them, that when they get out ont the streeets they have no idea what to do. Inmates have no idea how to care for themselves especially when modern technology is so advanced and they do not know how to use it. Inmates are barely getting a GED because they are on a computer and teacher sits at desk.
Inmates are only allowed to use their tablets for commnication with loved ones and media. They are allowed to use the computers if they are in the GED class. Considering how much the outside world uses computers, you would think that prisons would offer computer classes. Inmates do not know how to complete a resume or use computer applications or programs. And that is just setting inmates up to fail.
What needs to change? A lot needs to change. Stop setting inmates up to fail. More computer classes, there are ways to set up computers so that they can learn without getting on the internet. Letting them be more responsible for themselmes while they are in prison, (which might stop a lot of the fighting) give them more skills and job training so that when they get out they are capable of getting a job.
